Synopsis: When diva adult film star Kymberli, Kaylani Lei, gets fed up with the lame, cliché’ filled scripts her team of writers keep coming up with, she decides to take matters into her own hands. What she and her hilarious cast of characters come up with is movie making magic, at least according to them. What really happens is a laugh filled roller coaster ride of hot sex and pure adult fun!
Our Review: Up front, we want to be perfectly clear. 99% of all porn purported to be "couples friendly" is crap. There. We've said it. If you blindly buy an adult title to watch together, you will almost inevitably be disappointed and find your dollars have been wasted. Aside from the fact that men and women view porn differently, it's just plain difficult to write scripts and budget adequately for a film that will even come close to entertaining most couples, let alone turning them on. Turning to the internet offers little in the way of a solution; unfortunately, for those of us who like adult video larger than a tiny, YouTube-sized postage stamp (which, judging by the popularity of adult versions of YouTube, is obviously fine for masturbation by most males), watching internet porn just doesn't seem to create much spark - at least for us. On the DVD side, it's hard to justify 25 bucks on a title that in all likelihood will have us rolling our eyes and hitting the eject button within the first 2 minutes.
Continuing..Now, don't get us wrong. Even 1% of the thousands of titles released yearly means at least a few decent hours of fun. Pirates and its sequel, for example, are touchstones with regard to couples porn possibilities. Likewise, Hustler's parody series, which lampoon the Brady Bunch and Three's Company, among others, are more than decent adult entertainment options. Wicked Pictures, though mostly lower in budget than rivals Digital Playground (the company responsible for Pirates) and Hustler, manages to hit the mark on several occasions, most recently with their well-received The Lifestyle, featuring Stormy Daniels in both the starring role and Director's chair. Wicked, we must also point out, probably releases more couples-aimed titles than any other adult studio. And though we've not always enjoyed what's come forth from their catalog, there are times when, despite spartan production values and familiar stable of stars, they manage to pull off some pretty darned good flicks. Wicked's 2006 release Manhunters remains of the best adult films we've ever reviewed.
Such is the case with Writer's Bullpen, starring the always-fun-to-look-at Kaylani Lei, an Asian performer who bears more than a similar resemblance to a certain website co-owner. With a plot directly poking fun at the porn business (right down to Lei's diva attitude all the way through), and plenty of good sex scenes, we managed to do what's become almost impossible these days - watch the whole thing. In fact, being a bit jaded by watching hundreds, if not thousands of porn titles over the last nine years, we found ourselves fast-forwarding through most of the sex scenes to focus instead on the actual story.
The movie begins with a scene between blond Alexis Texas and delivery boy Mr. Pete, playing out the milkman scenario, which ends up being merely a mental exercise for Wicked's two head writers, played by Chris Cannon and Tommy Gunn. Enter Kaylani Lei, who is brought in to help brainstorm fresh ideas (a clever irony in and of itself). After throwing around ideas (cave girl does cave man, space aliens abducting cave men, cyborgs, cowboys, etc.), which of course play out as sex scenes. The writers even manage to write themselves in for a nice two-on-one section with Kaylani - easily the best scene of the DVD. If you're a fan of Kaylani, there's plenty of her to go around. We definitely had to pause on occasion to enjoy a bit of each other, meaning Writer's Bullpen accomplished its main objective.
In summary, there's lots to like here, especially if you're a Kaylani Lei lover (as we are). Wicked is to be once again commended for producing a nice couples effort that'll keep you coming back for more.
