The trouble comes in trying to recommend things, since porn seems to have such different affects on different couples. We may be turned on by a film like Catherine, for example, but we have no idea how it will pan out in the bedrooms of red state Middle America. Therefore, the balancing act we must perform when writing up these reviews makes it all the more important that we scrutinize and provide as much detail as possible, thereby guiding all of you toward decent choices to either rent or buy.

In that spirit, let me start off by saying this particular title is fairly tame, almost to the point of being acceptable for HBO. Or so it seems. In fact, this collection is solidly hardcore, even if the direction gives a softer feel. The sex scenes are not joined by any plot or common narrative structure, instead put together as stand-alone fantasies catering to a variety of situations. There's the hot dancing couple who start off the flick, for example, which then leads to a pair getting it on in a movie theater ticket booth, a tryst in a restaurant kitchen, and so on. Each scene is tastefully done, with a mixture of veteran porn stars mixed with young newbies, with NO anal, threesomes, facial come shots, or spitting during oral sequences anywhere to be found. In fact, Playgirl has put together such a good production we'll go out on a limb and say 99% of couples who've never watched porn will likely be turned on and hitting the pause button about 10 minutes in.

I suppose the most significant aspect of Private Pleasures that appealed to us was the variety of MEN they managed to cram into the 95-plus minutes. We recognized practically none of them and most are decent to great looking, making the proceedings - for once - just as good both of us (BTW, the males are given top billing in the credits and on the DVD cover, a nice touch by the folks at Playgirl). The sex is hot, chemistry is there, and - surprise - not a fake boob in sight. When you've watched as much porn as us, this fact alone is a minor miracle.

In summation, this is a GREAT title for couples ready to give porn a try and for those looking for nice background sex whilst making with the whoopee. The fact we like it speaks to the fact that, even after watching hundreds of shitty sex vids, there's still a few nuggets left to tantalize even us.
